a historic gem that's earned back 5-star status”

      1) historic charm, 2) attentive service, 3) super-central yangon location

a stunningly restored taste of colonial rangoon, the strand offers old world charm *and* world-class service. we had read complaints that the operation did not live up to the potential and history of the property, that rooms were tired, that staff were so-so, etc. we found none of this to be true: the strand is surely on the list of the top historic luxury hotels in the world. our room was nearly the size of our new york city apartment, with high ceilings, dark-wood floors and a huge bathroom that retains some historic fixtures but has clearly been recently renovated. contrary to what we read in lonely planet, there were both a flat-screen television and fast internet access in the room. we were staying on the third floor on the west side of the building, which meant the room was flooded with light in the late afternoon/early evening, as the sun descended. we spent lovely interludes in the room during this time, a wonderful respite from the wonderful chaos of central yangon just outside. another tip: we adored the traditional myanmar dishes during the generous breakfast service, the only time during our trip such dishes were on the menu. others here have complained about the strand's location, that it's in the hurly-burly of city and directly adjacent to traffic and crowds. that's the biggest reason we loved it here! there are leafy districts of yangon and luxury hotels aplenty there, but none where you can walk out of historic opulence and into the busy, teeming, wonderfully alive streets of this fantastic city. and yes, the hotel is expensive, but so are most other hotels in the country (for now, with such a limited supply of them). we felt we got more than our money's worth for the premium we paid here (as opposed to 2- or 3-star hotels charging 4- or 5-star prices in bagan, for example). we could not have enjoyed our two-night stay at the strand more! i look forward to seeing it appear on more world's-best lists as visitors continue to flock to myanmar.

      Strand 2018”

A hotel that would still meet the original intentions of the Sarkies Brothers! Regal in outlook, it did not disappoint in anyway during the five days we stayed and the Hotel 'Team' were outstanding in ensuring one's every need was catered for during the stay. The pool provided a haven from the hustle and bustle of the downtown Yangon and the Bar is excellent, as is the food delivered in the fine dining 'Strand Restaurant'. In terms of location, if you want down town Yangon access, then this is the place to stay, just accept the traffic implications(both noise and time to drive anywhere)! The personal touch of the butler service is excellent and, if you can afford it, go for an Executive room. Bar and laundry (very efficient service) prices very reasonable; I will return to this excellent establishment!

      Classical luxury”

The Strand has been renovated in keeping with its traditions as one of the great Asian luxury hotels and delivers on its promise. It is close to the colonial buildings of Yangon and Sule and has some good local restaurants nearby but it is a taxi ride to Shwedagon Pagoda. The Strand provides a calm oasis from the dust and hustle of Yangon, indeed, the contrast in worlds is palpable and it is difficult not to feel guilty staying there, given the reality of the world immediately outside. The staff, including the personal butlers, are all excellent; being served for breakfast was a surprisingly welcome change from the usual hotel self service buffet and the food and drinks are of a really high standard. The imminent opening of the swimming pool will be a welcome addition. The rooms are well equipped and it is good to find a hotel which provides quality towels and bed linen. Well worth a visit as a treat but difficult to justify the cost compared with other 5* hotels in Yangon.

      service, architecture, location

It was a splurge to stay here and i am glad we did. The Strand is an amazing place. You feel that you have stepped back in time but with all of today's mod cons. The lobby is impressive with the beautiful floors and lack of usual check in desk. In it's place there is a tasteful desk with a very civilized man who helps with other travel arrangements also. He even recommended another hotel for our return to Yangon and helped us to book it. Our room was immense, the bathroom was larger than many hotel room I have stayed in. I can't express how much I loved staying here, it is history and beautiful also. I love the restaurant, so civilized! The man in the lobby playing the traditional musical instrument was an added feature. I have been to Yangon several times and I am so happy that I decided to splurge and actually stay at the Strand!!! By the way the location is good too.

      Fantastic!”

      Comfort, cleanliness, attention

When my wife and I used to come to Yangon in the late 1990s, early 2000s, the Strand was vastly more expensive than anywhere else. Now, it is not much more and even less than many of the other four or five star hotels in town. We were pleasantly surprised by the care and attention the hotel staff gave our stay and our room was large, very colonial, and comfortable with amazingly high ceilings. The kitchen is probably still the best in Yangon and the breakfast is an all you can eat, made to order, feast. We enjoyed the historic bar as well which was really stepping back in time. Can recommend this as a first choice for anyone staying in Rangoon. BTW, while they do not have a pool (it was a colonial hotel built within space limits of the time) it has arrangements with neighbouring facilities to make swimming available. The staff were so nice--great stay!

Little bit of luxury and a whole lot of history!”

      Location, service and comfort.

The Strand is pricey, but its excellent location, large rooms and delicious but reasonable room service make the price tag a little less painful. A big fan of historical properties, I couldn't go to Yangon and miss the place where Orwell and Kipling overnighted! Each room is assigned a butler who is always a phone call away. Mine was particularly helpful, and helped with transformers, extra water and room service on a moment's notice. The spa is a regular hotel room on the second floor (no steam or whirlpool); the fellow who provided my massage was trained in Thailand and outstanding. The breakfast was weak (a la carte) but the coffee was excellent -- restaurant service was not great so I think room service is the way to go. The hotel houses an excellent art gallery, representing Myanmar's leading artists. All in all, an excellent property with some minor hiccups (inconsistent service and a little struggling with language) that I've come to expect in developing Asia!

Felt like a King in a Royal Palace”

Huge elegant wood-laden rooms, attentive friendly service, classy food

I wanted to stay at the Strand as it is famous for housing Rudyard Kipling in the past. I did not expect to find such an amazing place! The beautiful elegant high ceiling rooms are laden in wood and marble. I booked into the basic bedroom (no view) but it was huge: big ensuite area and a bathroom with separate doors for shower and toilet (also environmentally friendly touches). I like the thoughtful touches such as little presents and a comic-style book on do's/don'ts for tourists. The staff were great: friendly, helpful, attentive but not over the top. I missed out on the included breakfast (slept in) but had lunch twice (Myanmar and international) which was delicious. The only downside was the room price: expensive compared to other Asian boutique 5 Star's eg Centara Grand Beach Hotel Hua Hin Thailand (but about right for Yangon!). No gym or pool, to keep in line with history, but there were spa/pamper facilities. I can't wait to stay there again - this time I won't sleep in.

      A colonial jewel in Yangon”

      Service, food and location

If you are heading to Yangon for business or on holidays do yourself a favour and spend at least a few nights of your stay here. After recently spending time at a number of the better hotels across Myanmar, it was very clear that The Strand was the only hotel that was truly world standard or in their case, arguably better. We booked one of the Deluxe Suites and loved the experience. The room and bathroom was fantastic and provided direct access to the front balcony of the hotel. The suites allow you to experience the full colonial grandeur of a hotel that was once the sister hotel to the Raffles in Singapore. That experience includes a butler service was efficient and like all of the staff we dealt with helpful and friendly. Another plus for this hotel was the first class food. Sadly not something I can say for any of the other Myanmar hotels we experienced. On the negative side, customers expecting a pool or fitness centre in house will be disappointed as these were not available. However, we were advised that the hotel will make arrangements for guests to use facilities elsewhere in the city.

      Excellent in all ways!”

We stayed 3 nights at the Strand and had superb experience. The room is recently renovated and very spacious. I think there are only 30-40 rooms in the hotel which makes it feel exclusive. The 24hr butlers are also very helpful. The food is beyond delicious, both local and Western dishes. We had breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the Strand Cafe and were not disappointed with any dish (must try: egg cardinal, mohinga, and earl gray milkshake). The location is convenient, close to nice cafes (try Sharky's, Rangoon Tea House, and Moonson), beautiful colonial buildings, and tourist attractions like Sule Pagoda and St. Mary Cathedral. Staff are friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again if we have a chance to go back to Yangon.

Best part of my itinerary in Yangon”

      Quite, privacy, feel like home..

I am travelling with a friend. We are so glad that we have booked Strand for the last night of our stay in Yangon. Weather was not promising, raining most of the time. Strand provide us an alternative of appreciating and obesrving the life of busy traders by the river side without getting wet. The breakfast in the hotel was the best meal I had in Myanmar.Enjoying afternoon tea with scone in style is definitely something unexpected from what it has got to offer from Yangon. The stay is not cheap, but it worth every single penny.

      Colonial luxury”

      Location, breakfast, history

We had a quick overnight stop in Yangon before continuing to Inle Lake and stayed at The Strand because of its central location. The hotel is a well-preserved, historical place with very large and comfortable rooms. When we woke up in the morning we had a delicious breakfast then went for a walk to Sule Pagoda and around the colonial center of the city before heading back to the airport for our next flight. It was perfect for that stop and would be a great place to stay for a longer time in Yangon too.

      An escape from the heat”

the strand bar is the social point of the hotel, a great place to chat to others who are either casually having a cold one or two, or as the evening progresses other residents staying for the night.

i loved the Strand. i always have, the first time i visited was as a walk in visitor over christmas / new year 1994. It was always my intention if ever i visited to stay there. i finally managed this about 20 years after my initial visit and i was not dissapointed. The hotel as a timeless feel the staff carry out their role to perfection. On a return visit to Yangon i tried another place, it wasn't long before i was back in a taxi and heading back their for cocktails. It is quite simply the only place that matters in Yangon..

      Amazing hotel experience”

We were on a quick stopover in Yangon to start our honeymoon in Myanmar and stayed two nights at the Strand Hotel. The hotel had just been renovated a month before and everything was perfect, from the staff that was lovely, special treats as honeymooners, advices on how to get around... Most importantly the hotel is one of these architectural gems that make you travel out of time. The renovation has been done with great taste, the rooms are beatufully appointed with high ceiling and nice furnitures. The resturants and bar are also beautiful and cosy, and the food is prepared well with excellent ingredients. I was impressed by the quality of the hotel in all aspects, it's probably the best experience I've had in Asia for a city hotel.

elegant room, friendly staff, historical interest

The Strand exceeded my high expectations and was well worth the cost. The hotel has an air of understated luxury and is an oasis of calm in downtown Yangon. The staff look after you well and respond quickly, positively and helpfully. The rooms are large and well equipped.

      Yangon in Style”

I love the colonial grandeur, something of days gone by, with a sense of the history of that period in Yangon. Very comfortable. A good place to relax.

I stayed only one night but wished I had longer (partly because there was more that I wanted to see in Yangon). This hotel is expensive but it is value for money. The room was very spacious, beautifully decorated with antique furniture. It gives a real sense of the colonial history of the place. Great spa - I had an Asian Foot Massage (better than I have had in Singapore). Good Myanmar food both for dinner and breakfast. Close to the Chinese area and also the wharf where a lot of the produce comes in, so still close to the action and places of interest. I was there on the second full moon night and Chinatown was full of good street food and monk led mediation. Its a good time to be in Yangon.

Pleasant with a taste of history”

Historical colonial building, massive room, sumptious breakfast

Being the most expensive hotel in Yangon, The Strand ticks all the boxes of what you'd expect from a high-end boutique hotel bar a view from your window. Our room was well maintained and decorated and all the staff we dealt with are attentive (common in Myanmar) and speak good enough English (uncommon in Myanmar). They also have a ver nice all-you-can-eat a la cart breakfast menu. The only thing that spoilt my experience slightly is that when the waiter delivered our in-room breakfast he unplugged my charger and re-plugged in the bed-side lamp, but he left my international-power-point adapter on the wall and it's probably still sitting there in room 109. Subsequently I was left without an adapter for the rest of my trip and it caused my some stress from time to time.

A colonial gem well worth a stay”

The historic building, the staff, the location

This is a great hotel if you like old colonial hotels and a high level of personal service. My family and I stayed here for four nights in early May, 2014, during a tourist visit to Yangon. Our stay was great from start to finish. We booked airport pickup from the hotel and it worked fine and check in was quick and easy. The hotel has only a handful of rooms and each floor is looked after by a butler. The staff are curteous and friendly and quick to respond. The rooms are huge. Breakfast is served at the table and, naturally, there are fewer choices than from a buffet. However, the food was delicious and being waited on at the table is more civilized than a buffet. The hotel bar is great with good drinks and friendly staff; lots of expats on Fridays. This is a great hotel but don't choose it if you're looking for value for money or modern facilities (the building is 100+ years and plumbing, and so forth are not entirely up to date) or a swimmingpool (there is none). Do choose it if you want a piece of history and old-fashioned, excellent personal service.

Friendly and attentive staff, old world charm, delicious food

We only had two days in Yangon and are so glad we spent them at the Strand. It was worth every penny for the service and old world charm. They have done a remarkable job restoring and maintaining this hotel. It made us feel like we were staying in another place and time, yet it was very close and accessible to more of the current day sites that we wanted to visit. The food and drinks were also delicious and be sure to get a copy of their colonial walking tour to learn about some of the buildings nearby.

The staff, the room and the hotel itself

As a baby boomer couple who had to spend 5 additional days in Yangon, the Strand Hotel was our oasis during those days. We enjoyed every minute of our stay at the hotel starting with the daily breakfasts which were so abundant and the personal attention provided by the hotel staff and having our own personal butler. It was a great stay and I would not hesitate staying here again or recommending it to family and friends.

my stay at the strand hotel in downtown yangon was very pleasant.the staff were very helpful and friendly at all hours of the day.the breakfast was delicious each day in the cafe and while the dining room was impressive and the courses well presented ,the food was not very good. after a long day of meetings ,the spa treatment i had was thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable.the river art gallery in the hotel was well representative of the country's numerous talented artists and by regularly changing its pieces on display it maintained a fresh perspective for visitors.with regards to communications , internet connections were often poor and unreliable and will hopefully be improved in the near future.
