Excellent service!!”
The owners are really friendly and helpful! 5 stars for that! They have provided us with many travel advices/recommendations!! We engaged their help to book tickets to the forbidden city using their e-payment which we did not have and also book tour to the Great Wall! The accommodation is courtyard size and we do enjoy sitting at the courtyard for a drink or breakfast or mingle with owners/other travellers. Location near several attractions e.g. Forbidden city/nan luo gu xiang/hou hai and many restaurants, all within walking distance (thou is quite a bit of walking). Overall good stay!

I would never stay anywhere else in Beijing!”
My boyfriend and I (mid 20's) had a great time here. I did a ton of research in picking a place to stay in Beijing, and it certainly paid off. We were in one of the rooms off of the lobby, but we were there in November so there weren't too many other travelers for it to be loud like some other reviews report - we brought ear plugs just in case, but didn't need them. It was absolutely charming, safe, the staff were attentive. We had breakfast there on two mornings because we got up VERY early and it was so good! I had some sort of granola bowl and then a noodle bowl. One of my favorite things were the meals, snacks and drinks offered - they were so cheap! We hadn't booked our great wall trip prior to the visit because we couldn't find a reasonable trip for what we wanted. We booked our trip through the hostel and it was exactly what we wanted (and cheaper than alternatives!) - we didn't want the "touristiest" (Badaling) or the very difficult one - so we chose Mutianyu on the staff's recommendation. They were there to pick us up on time and we made some great friends. My aunt is from Beijing and my Aunt and Uncle travel there often, when I told them where I was staying, they said they heard really nice things. I'm the kind of person who doesn't want to stay in a name brand hotel, and i certainly don't need the top accommodations when abroad because i'm out exploring most of the time, so this was a great home base. OH! And it's located very close to a hot pot restaurant that was an amazing experience. The staff showed us how to use the bus system, which i'm so glad we did. It was incredibly cheap, close by, and convenient. The location of the hostel seemed so safe, I didn't feel uncomfortable walking around late at night in the dark. One down side was that it was a little tough to find at night, but be sure to print out directions and use a map. I would 100% recommend this hostel for anyone traveling to Beijing.

Friendly, homely environment”
The rooms were very comfortable with everything that was needed such as a sit down toilet, a heater and towels etc. There were no extras such as soaps and hand creams etc. The staff were very friendly supplying a map and useful advise. The courtyard area was a well presented area where other guests could socialise and had a very homely feel. There were basic meals available in the accommodation as well as a great choice of restaurants in the surrounding area. There were drinks and souvenirs available at the cheapest prices in the accommodation. It is located close to many local attractions in Beijing. It is also along a bus route which made it easy to get to attractions. They organised an excellent shopping free trip to the Great Wall for us. The feel of the place was like a luxury hostel with the social environment along with the features of a motel. We very much enjoyed our stay there and would stay there again.

Great location,great people,great value”
The Courtyard House is a great location to all the major attractions in Beijing either by walking or bus/subway.But what really makes this place special is the people.Rick,Rachel, and Lucy could not have been more helpful during our visit. All speak excellent English and provided us with written English and Chinese instructions for everyplace we wanted to go.I made the mistake of booking some things(Great Wall trip,Acrobatic show) before traveling to China.Rick can do all this for about half the price I paid.Food is very good and inexpensive. If you want the true Beijing Hutong experience this is the place to stay.

Fantastic place”
We stayed here in March This place is just great, in fact we loved it so much that we stayed twice! This place just made our visit to Beijing. On arrival, (having followed their directions, thus finding it first time) the check in was one of the best we've had for a long while. It was quick and easy, and we were then given a map with all the sights, and details of when best to go and how to get there, and all done with charm and a sense of humour. The rooms themselves I think have previously been described as not that big, but they were a good size, extremely comfortable and very clean. This place has a great social area, the inner courtyard was interesting and a good place to meet other travellers. The food that they served there as well was just awesome, big dishes of chinese food that was extremely tasty and great value for money...as was the beer in the fridge! We took an excursion with them to The Great Wall of China and it was a good day out. Overall the service and the comfort of room was excellent and it's difficult to find fault. We would highly recommend and would stay again.

secure and friendly courtyard hostel off a hutong”
after staying in a hotel the night before, it was good to get a chance to experience the real beijing by staying in this courtyard style hostel just north of jingshan park. the helpful staff were also able to recommend and book a trip to the great wall at mutianyu, which didn't include all the usual tourist traps on the way, straight there and straight back (after lunch of course). freshly cooked meals and drinks are very reasonably priced and along with free wi-fi there are 4-5 public computer terminals available to use.

Great hotel with great owners”
We had a great stay at City Walls courtyard House. On arrival we got a bunch of travel advice, on where to go. The hotel is a bit tricky to find in the middle of a Huton neighbourhood, but the locals will tell you where to go. It's a 10 min walk to the nearst metro station. There's a bus stop with buses to Tiananmen square within 5 mins. The owners are very friendly and very willing to give advice.

Amazing location and excellent staff”
My partner and I stayed here for one night when we first arrived in Beijing. The owner is incredibly helpful and has excellent English. He went out of his way to ensure our stay was pleasant and answered all of our questions. He went over and above what we expected and provided us with detailed directions and even called a restaurant we wanted to visit to order us duck and get directions from them. We have visited many hostels and hotels but he helpfulness of the staff here is unrivalled. We visited the great wall for a night but we enjoyed our stay so much we came back for two further nights. If you are coming to Beijing you must stay here!

Comfortable, Friendly and very Central.”
I would recommend this hotel for any sort of traveller. The hosts hand out a map when you register which ensures you can always find your way home and can navigate to all the famous sites. They also provide some suggested itineraries which cover all the most visited sites as well as some l'd never heard of. These include instructions on where to catch the bus or train and the destinations in both English and Chinese script to show the conductor. We used the instructions and the map every day even if we didn't visit every site. The peace and tranquility of the courtyard setting made it a real treat to come home to after pounding the pavements all day. I must also mention the food which is of exceptional value and totally delicious. A big bowl of steamed vegetable dumplings for breakfast with freshly ground coffee - yum!

Fantastic location. Abounding with charm. ”
Convenient walk to many tourist attractions - loved experiencing the slice of life and old world feeling winding through the hutong neighborhood on the way. Sitting in the super charming courtyard with a nice cup of tea was a great way to relax after a long day of sightseeing. Rick and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I really appreciated the print out of itinerary and restaurant suggestions they give you when you arrive. The bathroom might leave a little more to be desired, but nothing unexpected. Overall, great value for the money, and a wonderful experience.

5 start hostel in my opinion”
We do not normally stay in backpacker/hotel lodges. However, I was pleasantly surprised with this one/. Upon arrival, the staff spent about 15-20 mins going over tours, maps, food etc with us. Their english was great which is something you do not see in Beijing often. They were able to setup tours for us, and give us tons of information on the easiest and cheapest way to get around. The location of this hostel was also fantastic! Walking distance to alot of areas we wanted to visit. Also very near to the train

Awesome and helpful staff”
Great place. It's a bit of a walk to the metro but not to bad. The staff are extremely helpful and give you example itinerary on arrival with best restaurants in area, things to see, a full size map of where to go. They speak very good English as well. Also they can arrange shows and stuff at a discount. We saw the acrobat show which was pretty cool. They also have a decent menu for breakfast or if you are feeling lazy as well as good priced drinks and some snacks for sale. They also arranged us a cab to the airport for our early flight that was before the metro opened. Very helpful. Room was also very good and clean. Only things negative I can say are that the Internet is pretty bad and you can't do much more than load basic email. They also had to be creative with their plumbing so you will only be able to get about an 8 minute got shower before it goes cold and has to reheat. Other than that it's a great place, great location, and great price.

Quiet yet fun experience in noisy Beijing”
We had a wonderful time. The rooms are a bit awkward in that the windows open out into the common area. This means anyone sitting in the common courtyard could hear your business and vice versa. This is just what you will get with a courtyard hotel but it is just good to be prepared for not a lot of privacy. The owners/staff definitely made this stay nicer. They were friendly and helpful. The great wall tour started off with cold McDonald's sandwich and a Coke as the "included" breakfast so you may want to pack your own! We also got lost quite a bit wandering the surrounding Hutong trying to find our way around, but the neighbors seemed used to this and were helpful in pointing us in the right direction.

Not great”
I was kind of disappointed in this place, going by the reviews. The location was good in that it was walking distance to the Forbidden City and restaurants and shops. However, the place itself wasn't great. It was very cluttered, disorganized, small, and the bathroom was moldy. On the plus side the staff was extremely helpful and friendly and provided great information about the area.

More of a backpackers inn”
Overall alright. Although it is near to Jing Shan Park and Forbidden City, I would prefer to stay at Wang Fu Jin area the next time. There is no restaurant or shops around this hotel. Room is small and no hair dryer provided in the room. You will have borrow it from the lobby counter and return right after using. This hotel sells very cheap Chinese beer. 3 RMB for a bottle of 600ml. You can drink it at the lobby as there are many tables and chairs provided. You need to whisper at night as you will disturb other hotel guest.

Great location, cozy hostel and friendly staff”
Even though we were here just for one day, the hostel was one of the best experiences. Very friendly and helpfull staff, great location in the middle of Beijing, and great ambience, free wifi, free computer use, other travellers, nice bookrack. This is how guesthouses/hostels should be.

Cool hostel, location not so great though”
Super cute courtyard hostel, but I will say the neighborhood is quite rundown. Beijing is super safe, but not my favorite part of the city. People working there are also extremely friendly and helpful.

4 nights at Sitting on the City Walls”
We had a great time at this hostel (4 nights). It might need one or two small things fixed (shower head, bathroom door handle) but it was comfortable with powerful aircon. Very relaxed atmosphere everywhere, very helpful staff - a really good idea to have a series of recommended day tours with bus and subway guides and map. Nice mix of other guests. Great location, not easy to find on the first day, but local people were kind and friendly. Once you know it though, it was easy to get to everywhere we wanted to get to. Recommend it, and we would happily stay there again.

first Beijing”
Hard to find as cars can't drive to the front door. There were no signs on the main road and the taxi driver had to walk around the hutong for nearly over half an hour to find it; this was a 2 a.m. and it was raining and I wasn't going to pay him until we had found the front door. The common area could do with a big clean up. The room we stayed in had a big en-suite and small bedroom. I feel it was over rated at the price and I would rate it at 1.5 stars. I paid the same price to stay in Day Inn near the Forbidden City, being a much nicer hotel in a more convenient location - metro nearby.
