Traveling to Sri Lanka? Find Badulla District hotels

We spent 2.5 weeks travelling around Sri Lanka and stayed in everything from basic hotels to 5 star resorts and Misty Hills was the real surprise. Best value for money of any of the hotels. The photos on their or Agoda's website doesn't do the rooms or the view justice. The views are spectacular. They were in the process of finishing renovations - for the better. The rooms are huge. Great location (although there are lots of stairs to climb). If you can afford a little extra, pay for the rooms on the top floor. That said, the rooms on the lower floor would have excellent views too. We had the Sri Lankan breakfast included in the room rate and it was excellent (and a lot of food). The only negative was the electricity kept cutting in and out, but you roll with the punches and it only took a couple of mins to turn back on. Overall highly recommended and we would definitely stay at Misty Hills again.

Hotel OnRock was at the more expensive end of my accommodation selection in Sri Lanka, but I was not disappointed. I needed to use the business facilities during my stay, and no request was too difficult for the brother and sister team who manage the hotel. My laundry was done in less that 24 hours. The room was clean, had a very comfortable bed, private bathroom with hot water, a lockable closet, and a wonderful view of Ella's Rock, Ella's Gap, and Little Adam's Peak. Breakfast was the best I had in Sri Lanka, with fresh fruit, fresh juice, string hoppers, and your choice of coffee or tea. I also had a delicious diinner with the aforementioned view. I definitely recommend Hotel OnRock, and thank the staff for their help.

We stayed 2 nights end of March and had a wonderful time. The forest pavilion is just lovely and had a large thick mosquito net over the bed if you are scared of insects at night. The swimming pool area is charming and very calm. The hotel is located a short walk from Diyaluma waterfall and its own private waterfall. Very relaxing stay with great staff and food, a little bit in the middle of nowhere so best for couples. Dinner menu is $25 and you can have snacks for lunch. Drive is around 1h30 from Ella. No leeches given dry month.

We had a nice big room with a modern bathroom. The cleaning in the hotel corresponds to European standard and is really very good. Breakfast is available in Sri Lanka or continental style and both taste very good. Our kids (5 and 9) liked the continental style with fresh eggs, toast and fresh fruits. The hotel is centrally located on a hill and is therefore quieter than the hotels right on the main road. For us as a city people, the hotel was very quiet and has a beautiful view about Ella. The hotel owners are from Germany and Sri Lanka and therefore you will find here the best of both worlds. Kurt and Lakshmi had a lot of good tips for trips and restaurants. They also helped us organize the onward journey. Overall a perfect stay in Ella!

The staff are very helpful , just ask them and they are there for you . Mr. Ash at the reception is just an amazing young guy who enjoy to help you . The location of the hotel is 100% perfect . On the main road where all the restaurants and bars exist . If you can afford the price than I advise you that you will not find a better hotel than this one . The perfect selection. I will definitely return to this property on my next visit to Ella . They give you more than What you expect from a 3 star property . It is perfect value for money

Quirky rooms and decor throughout the hotel - everything is unique and individual to the room / floor. The staff were lovely and really helpful, especially the housekeeping guys. Views of Little Adam's Peak were amazing. Rooms were clean, comfortable and spacious. Unfortunately the Tv's in the room didn't work and wifi was sketchy at best - but we didn't go there to watch movies and surf the net but the poor internet made planning trips a little difficult. Highly recommended for families.

Please note this hotel is in Haputale about 2 hours from Nuwara Eliya. This resort is in the mountains away from almost everything. There are tons of monkeys that play in the natural waterbeds later in the day. We watched them for about an hour. It was so cool to see. If you are looking for relaxing,peaceful atmosphere where the staff is willing to do whatever to make you happy this is your place! I would spend at least 2/3 nights since it is quite a drive. There are many scenic waterfalls to drive to.i did notice the hotel had a few bikes that could possibly be used. We had their guide take us on a 2 hour hike through some serious brush and jungle and ended up at an awesome waterfall that you could climb around. This hike is not for small children and you must use their guide. He had to use a machete to clear path and their is some poison oak/ivy type trees so I would advice long sleeves and pants . We did not get affected but our guide did.Our kids were 8/10 and it was pretty tough for them but they did do it. The food is plentiful and tasty. We were able to fit a family of 4 in their luxury room comfortably. The manager gave us a free upgrade from the room originally booked once he saw kids were with us. Bring a good book,a deck of cards ,kick back and enjoy!

Buidling is new as expected but got shocked rooms cleanliness doesn't match and many things missing: Nokettle though brought when requested. No tea-coffee. Only 1 littre bottle of water for a tripple room. Third bed matress is shorter than the bed. Bathroom window open on corodidor(no one can see but they can hear you). Windows not sealed and can invite insects and gekos. When I complained they closed the using old newspapers. The staff are kind but you always need to repeat your request to get fulfilled.When I argued with the manager that this is marketed as 4 star hotel, he said: no, if Agoda says that it's not our fault. Dinner options are only 2 and portion is small but they also give you so up and dessert. The worst part is no driver accommodation.and I had to pay my driver 4000 ruppies for 2 days accommodation. The pool is very nice we enjoyed it as well as the magnificent view that is rare to find anywhere. In general recommended and would go back but they better fix these easy issues and also be a proper 4 star as their hotel deserves to be a 4 starer. My best guess is they have financial problems after building the hotel as they are a family of father and sons operating the business.

This small and elegant hotel has lovely grounds and elegant rooms ( ours had an amazing bathroom ). The new rooms are almost ready and are stylish and spacious. The pool was clean and warm and the food was delicious and really nice to be able to dine out under the stars. The staff were all gracious and helpful and extremely welcoming.The chef is really very good. There is some landscaping going on which is pretty much finished and the hotel will then be one of the finest in the Ella region. A real haven of beauty and tranquility.

The hosts/owners were so friendly and helpful. They made our stay and our experience of Sri Lanka very special. The resort is walking distance from both the 9-arch bridge and Little Adam's Peak. It's a 1km nice walk or a tuk tuk ride into Ella. A very natual and generally peaceful place (just some traffic noise). Surrounded by trees and we even saw small and large squirrels, wild hens and wild deer at the resort. Lovely food. The hosts even took some time to teach us some Sri Lankan cooking. Highly recommended for people who like walking and nature, and want a more personal experience of Sri Lanka.

it's a modern villa tucked into the valley. we enjoyed our stay but there is not much to do. the dipping pool was too cold to swim (and too many bugs) and there is no wifi. we ran around in the tuktuk and visited a nearby village. the waterfall is nothing fantastic. please note that there are only two suites. the people running the hotel (at least on the premise) are local and do not speak english. they are not trained in any way to run a five star villa. the bathroom is pretty but outside with tons of bugs and insects. there are rocks all around the bath tub so it's difficult to get in and out of. there is no restaurant. they bring the food to you. we needed to hire a taxi to take us to our next destination. the hotel was not helpful - found us a very expensive service with a run down van that turned up forty-five minutes late. this is not to say that we didn't have a good time. we did

I had a fantastic time at Ella's Edge Resort. I was traveling alone and the staff did all they could to make sure I was comfortable. Everyone was extremely nice and the food was amazing. The cook at the hotel is named Amarawonsc and he makes an excellent curry that changes each day. The kitchen is out in the open and you can peer over the edge and watch to see how they prepare it. One night Amarawonsc invited me down to the kitchen and gave me a lesson on curry cooking! He also makes a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast which was yummy. This hotel is about a 6-8 walk into the center of town. I like that its not in the heart of things so you can have the stunning views in peace and quiet and if you want to go out you're only a walk or a cheap tuktuk ride away. Out of all the hotels I stayed at in Sri Lanka this was the best value for what I paid. Please note that it is considered a 4-star hotel for Sri Lankan standards but it would not be a 4 star for western standards. The room was basic but clean and the view from my bed was incredible. The staff told me that the hotel was built about a year and a half ago which explains why everything seemed nice and new in the room. Thanks again, I will be back!

Me and my boyfriend ended up staying here for 3 nights and it was by far our best time in Sri Lanka. Our room was huge and clean with a TV with all sky channels. The guest house is ran by 3 people and the service was outstanding. Nothing seemed like too much trouble. We loved the food and ate all of our meals at Eees Cart. The young guy was brilliant and took us for a walk to see the temple and really looked after us. The chef was a good laugh!! We would definitely reccomend this place to all of our friends.

What amazing view from this hotel! We had the top floor room as we had read up on the hotel and people said the top was the best and they weren't wrong. The staff were incredible. They arranged a tour guide to take us up Ellas rock and even booked us a taxi for our travels down to Yala! The breakfast was amazing the only downside to it was the bed sheets need renewing as I could see through to the mattress the bed sheet was that worn out and also there was a few stains. These are little picky things but its something that needs addressing for future paying customers.

The resort is well placed for a chilled out break set within a Tea Plantation and lovely views, an interesting 15 minute walk into main street Ella (Tuk Tuk available for around 300 SLR). The staff are helpful and diligent and a special mention to the owner Rowan who far exceeded any service level to date, he runs the resort with passion and is genuinely a 'nice guy'. He went above and beyond to organise a cake and meal for my wife's birthday and although he had to do a lot of running around (I found out later that he took various trips to get what I needed) he did so without mentioning and did not include his time or cost in the final bill. Rowan is now expanding his business and we wish him every success for the future. As a final mention the food was some of the best we have had in Sri Lanka, tasty and consistent.

Tea Garden Holiday Inn was a pleasant place to stay in. The rooms are decent, clean and have a great scenic view with good working order internet. The staff were friendly, polite and very attentive. Never really got to meet or know the owner. The breakfast was simple but very nice....toast ( bread was lovely and fresh), fresh tea, fresh fruit, eggs, butter and jam...sounds basic but very taste and fresh. The breakfast area has a fantastical view. The location is the best, down from the hotel there are local buses going to all different places....lovely tea and street food shops. Up the road there are some lovely food places and bars....we ate at cafe chill- amazing food and lamprai- best food I've had! It's very bohemian and staff were great. Up the road from there was a lovely lovely local lady called Irlene who was very well spoken. She invited us to her house, have some local free food and even did cooking classes- Ashe is amazing!!!! The hotel arranged a private taxi to our next destination. We definitely recommend this place.

We had wonderful stay at this budget hotel. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, with spectacular views. On top the owner himself make sure u have good stay. Hotel cannot be reached on own car or taxi, as it's inside mountain with narrow road. How ever this is not an issue but advantage since it add to location of hotel which is inside the green mountains. You just need to call hotel they have own tuk tuk which will come to pick u up.

Very easy to get to from the station - turn left when leaving, walk down the hill, take a left and walk about 300m with a right at the police station. It's only a 10min walk to Ella main street, but you feel like you're in the forest in the evening, which is great. Three room homestay, with friendly host. Nice veranda at front for breakfast and sitting out. There's also a lounge area inside. Our host made pots of tea for us each afternoon. Breakfast is Sri Lankan and western. Lots of fruit to start. Good WiFi. The weather was very wet and overcast during our stay and shower was lukewarm - not sure if related. The host's son gave us a reasonably priced ride in his van when we left.

We travelled from Kandy to Ella BT train which is a 6 hour journey through some very pretty terrain. We spent two wonderful nights in this hotel and were so glad that we did as the rooms have huge comfortable beds and nice soft towels. The views from all room are fantastic and each room has a balcony area to sit on and admire the mountains and beautiful gardens. Delicious breakfasts of fruit, banana pancakes and omelettes were served on the patio area. The delightful owner is a remarkable, well travelled and connected man who is keen to give advice on visits and treks and was so keen to ensure that every aspect of our visit was perfect. We had the most AMAZING Thai meal in the evening (as the owner is married to a Thai lady). Everything was laid out perfectly with such lovely restful music. Felt like eating at a friend's house. We can honestly say that it was the best meal on all our travels and that has included many visits to Thailand. Most of the herbs are grown in the very well tended garden and our lovely cook showed us around her plants with such pride. She even gave us some seeds to plant when we get back to England. We couldn't attempt to climb Adams Peak but did visit the Neuberg green tea plantation and had a good tour there. Ella town was a little overstated with very many backpacker hostels so it was great that we could retreat to our hotel at the edge of the town. We also ate a great vegetable kutcha roti in Ella from the awfully named Fish and Chips restaurant. You can see them cook it all freshly in front of you. So delicious, we went back for another for lunch.

Absolutely loved our stay here for three nights which was perfect amount of time in Ella. After reading other reviews We booked the double room with mountain view which is at the front right of property. Definitely the best room as it is has both best privacy and best views. Most others have good views also except maybe the two nearest the road. Location is great, far enough out of town to be away from noise but only 5 mins to walk in or a few minutes by tuk tuk. Breakfast was simple eggs and toast and fruit but plentiful and enjoyable. Staff very helpful although bring your own water and snacks as there is nothing in reception or closer than town. Would definitely stay here again. Recommend walking up little Adams peak it's only 30 mins each way and beautiful views.

Hotel was charming, surrounded by a lovely garden, perched on a hill in the city center. Not a modern five star. Rather a quirky heritage hotel. Wifi only really worked in the lobby and restaurant, but there was a beautiful Christmas tree, couches, fireplace. There as well as a fireplace in the .charming bar. The room key is about 4 “ long and brass. Service was superb, including ensuring we had a boxed breakfast when we left at 530 for our drive to the airport. The GM called our driver and asked to speak to us en route to make sure all arrangements were acceptable. Room was large and clean. Deep bath. Breakfast and dinner buffets were excellent. Western food so so. One massage by the regular masseuse was wonderful and quite affordable. A facial and herbq steam by the back up were so-so. Would be nice if spa room had hot water. All in all, a gem. I would definitely return. Conveniently located to visit Ella,, Lipton’s Seat...

From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel welcomed. Nandana, the manager greeted us & took us to our room & made sure we had what we needed. We were enchanted by the amazing view of Ella from our room! Wow, spectacular view! The room was large, clean, & comfortable. It had a sitting area & balcony with chairs to sit & enjoy the view. Needless to say, we slept well. The following morning, we enjoyed our fruit smoothie, coffee, tea, a plate of fresh fruit, toast with butter & jam, and our omelettes. Nandana kindly showed us photos of some of the sight to visit in Ella & fully answered all our questions. When it was time for us to leave Ella, Nandana arranged a driver for us at a discounted price. We highly recommend Hotel Alta Vista & hope to return again! Thank you Nandana for going above & beyond & making sure we were happy & comfortable!
