A world away from mainstream tourism.”

Remote, sublime location. Nine, 5 star, architecturally designed luxurious villas. Owner operated, with enthusiastic warm Balinese staff. Great beach - For walking, swimming, learning to boogie board or surf. Very quiet

Kelapa Retreat & Spa Review Pekutatan, Jembrana. Bali, Indonesia. Overview Remote, sublime location. Nine, 5 star, architecturally designed luxurious villas. Owner operated, with enthusiastic warm Balinese staff. Great beach - For walking, swimming, learning to boogie board or surf. Very quiet THE DETAIL Not having stayed at Kelapa Retreat previously, I initially booked four nights. By the end of day two, I had booked an additional seven nights! I had found what I was looking for. Having first visited Bali in the mid 1970's, and then again on average once every ten years, it had been twelve years since I my last trip to the island. Unsure if it still existed, I was after a genuine Balinese experience, combined with solitude in comfort (perhaps even luxury) to provide myself the opportunity for personal rejuvenation. The Kelapa Retreat experience provided this and then some. The Kelapa Retreat is located in Jembrana district, Bali's least populated region, adjacent to the village of Pekutatan. It is approximately 2 hours driving time west from Kuta/Legian, with this distance being precisely the reason the region remains remote, and yet to be touched by Bali's mainstream tourism. Kelapa means coconut in Indonesian, with the nine stunning villas (designed by the owner & architect in residence -Gordon) being set in a beautiful coconut grove, right on a thirteen kilometer isolated beach. During my stay (July/August, 2011) the beach (with black, graphite fine sand so highly revered by the Balinese) had excellent waves for bodysurfing or learning to boogie board/surf : sandy bottom, relatively slow wave compared to popular Bali surf spots, and gentle currents, combined with complete solitude! A keen bodysurfer, most days I was literally the only one in the water! (Note: If the salt water and waves are not to your liking, the 15 meter pool within the grounds is sure to please.) The nearest tourism development of any form is a 3-4 star small resort approx 3

Great Get Away”

Beautiful Beach, Great Staff, Quiet and Secluded

We selected Kelapa Retreat and Spa Hotel for our annual vacation with my business partners from the United States and Bali. Each year I research locations that are unique and offer something different and outstanding. We chose Kelapa because of their secluded location and expansive beach as a place to relax and enjoy nature. The staff is excellent and attentive and the rooms were comfortable and well laid out. The only design issue is that the large sliding glass doors which are the entrance to each room rattle when the air pressure from breaking waves hit them. Something that the architect never considered in the design and rather unique. The location is beautiful and for a complete get away I would highly recommend Kelapa. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Total Relaxation”

Friendly staff, surf beach, seclusion, small resort.

If you want total relaxation then this is the place for you. After staying at the Kelapa Retreat and Spa was everything we hoped it would be - total relaxation. There were only 5 other couples when we stayed, and we took full advantage of the beautiful wet edge pool overlooking the beach, the bar conveniently located next to the pool, and the surf (my wife loved the boogie board!). The staff were excellent and nothing was too much trouble - even room service for incidentals. The restaurant menu provided a good variety of local and international dishes for both breakfast and dinner, and the food was superb! A thoroughly enjoyable resort and one we will definitely revisit

Absolutely delightful resort ”

Quiet, peaceful, clean, friendly, thoughtful, details-focused, gorgeous food.

I was so pleasantly surprised by Kelapa Retreat. The staff were so thoughtful, every detail was attended to, and yet all of this was a backdrop to the natural beauty that Kelapa seems to nestle into. Going to sleep every night hearing the thud and crash of the waves on the shore was so peaceful and took me straight into the holiday mode I needed. The food at Tides restaurant was delightful, not to mention the fabulous 'Kelapa Moon' and 'Tide Struck' cocktails. I'm missing them now! I swam in the infinitity pool every day and most of the time didn't even see another guest. Then we would emerge from tours, rooms, and walks on the beach and have gentle chat at dinner. It was unique to get to know other guests - it felt personal, safe and friendly. As a solo traveller, this was ideal. I had a reflexology / tension relief massage that was incredibly good. I would travel just for that! Highly recommended.

Peace, tranquility and excellent food”

Our arrival was extremely welcoming and the staff looked after all our needs in the most pleasant manner, even after our realisation that we had made an error with our booking which they helped us to rectify and then making a refund to us. Our suites were comfortable with 'in' or 'out' showering facilities, large comfortable bed and excellent wifi. On the terrace we had chairs and a day bed to relax on. The grounds are beautiful and well kept, the food is excellent and the quietness is only broken by the sound of the sea. We would recommend Kelapa Retreat to anyone wishing to take 'time out' and experience the south west side of Bali (the Tanah Lot area).

Rest & relaxation in idyllic setting”

Luxury & truly away from it all

If you like to look at those coffee table books that feature the most elegant architect designed villas in idyllic tropical settings- put yourself in the picture & treat yourself to a stay at Kelapa. It's gorgeous. Photos on website approach doing it justice but you need to be there to appreciate the proportions & setting. The sound of the surf a soothing constant. Beautiful pool in coconut grove, countless picturesque spots to lounge in peace & quiet, miles of beach to walk on. My partner discovered Kelapa a year ago & raved, we returned together & it lived up to our expectations. We enjoyed a gorgeous romantic relaxing break. At the end of our stay we are thrilled to have had the opportunity to visit the owners' mountain retreat in Tabanan - gracious knowledgable hosts & the most exquisite of settings. Who said you can't stop the world & get off? we hopped off for a week & came home feeling rested & refreshed.

Gorgeous hotel, perfect for a romantic break”

Friendly staff; spacious, stylish rooms; outdoor shower and bath

the kelapa retreat is perfect for those looking for a romantic get away or a place to unwind. the large and stylish villa-style rooms offered everyone their own private space to sunbathe and relax. the outdoor shower and bath were an excellent addition and the huge bed was very comfortable. the staff were really helpful and friendly and helped to make our stay especially enjoyable. this hotel is not the place for those looking for lively night life or an authentic cultural experience as it is a long way from the nearest town, however, it is a perfect for anyone looking for a little bit of quiet luxury.

Heaven on Earth”

Me and my Mum stayed in Kelapa from 06.05 till 13.05.2016. If you're looking for peace And tranquillity you will not find a better place. Surrounded by tropical coconut forrest and miles of beautiful beaches, Kelapa is a perfect place to find your inner peace and relax. Villas are spacious, well equipped and perfectly integrated into surrounding nature. We've booked a garden pool villa but got extremely lucky and got upgraded to Residence, a mansion with massive pool and huge garden! The staff during our stay deserves a big credit too! Super friendly and always there to help or assist. We've been to Bali many times before but Kelapa is a perfect place to escape all the touristy noise and really RELAX. We'd definitely be back! If you're looking for a peaceful holidays, in the middle of real Balinese nature, don't look any further, Kelapa IS the place to stay!

A perfect getaway from the crowds...”

This property is the perfect retreat if you just want to get away from the madding crowds and spend time alone with your significant other or family. It's literally in the middle of nowhere, so don't expect any other hotels, shopping or restaurants nearby. Be prepared to spend at least 3 hours to get there from the airport. The nearest village/town is about a 45min walk. If you love long beach walks and virtually having the beach to yourselves, this is the place. The black sand beach is especially pretty when the sun goes down. The property has two pools to swim laps, and a spa. You can also boogie board or surf (in the sea and online!). The pool villas have a wonderful view of the garden and sea. Even if it rains, you can spend time on the covered terrace. The rooms and bathrooms are huge! All the staff are wonderful and very accommodating. They did everything to make sure we had a fantastic stay. We found this hotel a great place to re-energize and just simply do nothing!

Excellent location, very friendly, efficient staff”

Comfortable, spacious villas, excellent service, beachfront location and great food. Rural location, nice sunsets over the sea. Small, quiet and intimate retreat.

After the long drive from the airport we arrived at the hotel, given a very friendly welcome and taken straight to our comfortable, modern villa The next morning we woke to see the beautiful view of the sea through the coconut palms and took our first of many walks along the deserted black sand beach. Due to the small number of villas it is possible to swim in the pool or use the sunlounges in the garden and be entirely on your own. The hotel offers several tours in a private car and we found our driver to be most friendly and helpful. The hotel has a policy of using the same driver for guests, so the driver who collected us from the airport was also our driver on our tours and when we left the hotel. Ideal venue for couples looking for a quiet relaxing retreat with the old Bali rural lifestyle going on nearby in the village of Pekutatan.

gorgeous!”

Beautiful hotel, stunning garden, amazing beach

do not let the drive from the airport deter you from this amazing "retreat". will not find another hotel with this standard anywhere in the world, let alone bali. but, if you like crowded beaches, kitschy tourist attractions, indifferent service, then this is not for you. what you will find, will be 8 of the most beautifully appointed rooms (with a gorgeous garden bath/shower), tranquil gardens, and the most attentive service. my only mistake when i booked here, was only booking 4 nights. the beach and surf are spectacular. there's easily bike and motor scooter rental, if you need some "excitement". the owner will even take you surfing with her!! when you leave this place, you will long to return and feel as if you are leaving family!!

Nice and calm retreat, but be ready to pay”

The atmosphere, the ambiance, the staff

We embraced the very kind welcome and discovered a very calm retreat with an atmosphere of serenity and luxury. The staff is extremely friendly and the food is good. The yoga and mindfulness activities were great, except that they stopped for Christmas. Also the Spa did a good job. The beach is just divine and serene. A minus point is the location. The hotel is far away from any distraction, so you have to stay at the hotel (or take the quite pricy) excursions. Additionally, do not expect anything to come cheap. Even the transport to the airport was highly overcharged. The price to pay, I guess, for an excellent stay.

excellent retreat location, quiet and beautiful”

Quiet, beautiful beach, nice gardens, friendly staff

This is an excellent choice for an escape from the busy city life. The hotel is very remote and nicely built in front of the amazing black sand beach. Our family were so impressed with the environment and the stay in Kelapa - the nice villa, the infinity pool, the quiet baliness gardens, very fine and sily black sand, the high waves on the beach that plays the music into your dream. We will be there again.

Peaceful, lovely beach!”

Big rooms, beautiful grounds, beach is gorgeous

We were looking for a different, quiet, peaceful location for our last couple of days in Bali and found it at Kelapa. Lovely grounds, pool, and beach. Waves are pretty big, not sure would be great for kids. Restaurant at hotel was really good, especially for such a small place. Only change I would make is for hotel to bring bathtubs inside room....bathtub currently on the enclosed patio is a little strange to me.

Beautiful hotel close to the beach”

seaview, big rooms, away of touristic areas

Kelapa is quite far from Bali airport :around 3 hours drive. The hotel is beautiful with very large rooms structured as bungalows with a terrasse and seaview. Nice place to relax away of the touristic areas

Friendly service on a quiet peaceful location”

Friendly staff, peaceful, beach

Beautiful and peaceful location on the west Bali coast, though ever so slightly isolated as there is not much else around - even in hotel Front. It is blissfully quiet but were unaware of the leve of remoteness. Although the hotel has been open since 2010 and there isn't much life around other than the hotel, the staff so the very best to keep you happy. It is the first hotel the manager has personally greeted us during our stay to check everything is fine and what they could do to make it better. Brilliant. The restaurant is nice - with food of a standard relative to the four star rating. Breakfast can be a bit repetitive and for a small hotel use more of a set menu style of dining rather than buffets. The plus is you food is cooked fresh for you, but drawback is there is less choice than other bigger hotels. I think the only thing that is a tad annoying - is the food dishes that shine (the duck and the Indonesian platter) can only be ordered a day in advance. This could be disappointing for visitors only coming a for a few days. But they are massive and beautifully cooked. The rooms are well equipped and spacious, with a nice huge bed, and outside shower was very pleasant. Overall really great for pure escapism, but don't go there expecting much more around.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING”

A truly superb retreat. But a retreat in the truest sense of the word. Miles away from anything even vaguely "touristy" - especially alternative places to eat. But what an exceptional stay. Very good food, wonderful staff and a lovely private beach. This is the place to come if you want to get away from it all. If not...look elsewhere.

Nice hotel and beatiful beach”

The rooms are just fine and the beach is lonely and very clean
Not much to do in the area

We stay for three days and everything was very pleasent and confortable. The staff of the hotel was very kind and helpfull. The outstandig and untouched nature of this hotel location is like going 30 years back when Bali wasn´t massive. Ideal for a cuple runaway from the busy Kuta and Dempasar. Very good also for family and kids relax.
