Great Location, Nice Facilities & Services”

Polite & helpful staff, free internet, proximity to Forbidden City & Tiananmen Square
Touristy location (but nothing the hotel can help really!); hot shower only gets to a certain temperature

As stated in one of the reviews below, I was looking for a hotel that offered a comfortable stay, but did not have the rates of a 5 star hotel. Hotel Kapok is one of them. The location is hard to fault, just 5 minutes' walk from Wangfujing, and 5-10 minutes' walk from either Tiananmen East Station, or Wangfujing station (Tiananmen East is slightly nearer). There are also plenty of 24-hour convenience stores on the same street as the hotel, which is always a good thing. We (my boyfriend and I) stayed in a Courtyard Room for 5 nights. The room was spacious, well-designed, and the open-plan bathroom, while taking some getting used to, was huge and extremely comfortable. I realise that some people might find the beds a bit on the hard side (Asian beds) - we found it comfortable. The staff were polite and helpful; although lack of English might have been a slight barrier, they still tried their utmost to help, even helping us explain to the taxi driver our next hotel (we stayed 2 nights at another Beijing hotel, in Chaoyang area). Overall, I would recommend this hotel (take the Courtyard room!) if you're solo-ing Beijing, i.e. without a tour guide/drive, for about 2-3 nights' stay, as although the hotel is close to Tiananmen Square, Wangfujing, Forbidden City, Mao Zedong's mausoleum, etc., other attractions such as summer palace and temple of heaven are further away. Dragonfly Spa (as you read from reviews below) is indeed on the same street as the hotel, but we didn't go in as the it was too expensive. We ended up going to Bodhi (look it up on Google, one opposite Workers' Stadium, another on Liangmaqiao lu), as they had discounted prices on selected massages if you arrived before 5pm. Dragonfly and Bodhi are both recommended

Great hotel with central location”

Spacious room, central location, good value for money

Hotel Kapok was conveniently located to major attractions such as the Forbidden City, Tiananmen square and the Wangfujing shopping street. However, we made the mistake of going to Beijing in Winter (As a Sydneysider I've never experienced such cold weather even when I went to the snows at Perisher). As such, it was a struggle to walk even 2 blocks after dark. For anything close by it wasn't easy finding legitimate metered cabs to take you back to the hotel as they didn't find it worth their time to take us back so we did a lot of walking in the cold. They have an underground subway system that is easy to figure out as everything is also in English but the closest subway to the hotel is in Wangfujing street and a 20 minute walk. Long story short, I really advise against going in Winter, unless you actually enjoy extremely cold weather. Getting the the hotel was difficult by taxi as this is a smaller, boutique hotel with an exterior that doesn't actually look like a hotel. We had to call the hotel so they could give instructions to the taxi driver, so make sure you have the hotel number on you. The reception was small but efficient with fast check-in and check-out. We stayed in room 2201 which was once the Chairman's room so there was an actual computer inside for use. This would have been great if the computer wasn't so slow, but it was still handy to have around. If you have a smartphone there's also free wifi in the rooms (with normal speed internet). Our room including the bathroom was lovely, spacious and modern, though we could hear the traffic from our room. Unfortunately, as it was Winter, the room was always around 14 degrees when we entered as the heat would turn off when we removed our card from the slot. And when you've been walking around freezing cold, It would have been great to come back to a warmer room, but we had to wait around half n hour for the room to get to 25 degrees. I'd stay it definitely lived up to its four star rating.

Great boutique hotel in a perfect location”

value for price, unbeatable location

As it was my first visit to Beijing, I wasn't sure which location would suit me well. I wanted to stay in a hotel which will allow me to walk to food outlets, shopping areas and other places of interest. Friends from HongKong suggested Hotel Kapok and I am glad I followed their advice. I loved the contemporary layout and furnishings and the free internet in the room is a major plus (it didn't matter that it wasn't wifi - a lan cable was provided). Food outlets just across the street were perfect for sampling local cuisine, from breakfast to dinner (most of them open until midnight!). Wangfujing shopping street was just a short walk away, passing through a block-long line up of evening food stalls serving all sorts of barbecue and local delicacy. The Forbidden City is a mere two-block away, and there is a nearby subway stop which makes going around the city a breeze. I will definitely consider staying in this hotel again on my next visit to Beijing!

Great Location, prompt front desk service”

Location

Hotel kapok has great location among Beijing's hotels. It is 7 minutes walk from the hotel to Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City. It is 5 minutes walk to the famous Wangfujing Street Food and other high end malls and "over priced" souvenir items. English is still in scarcity and it's weird that you can get by with your day to day communication with them by using "sign language" rather than actually talking. Our room is being cleaned everyday and bath amenities was replenished as well. There's complimentary bottled water and juice also. If you're doing a DIY, you can always ask help at the front desk and have them write the chinese name of the place you want to visit and show it to your taxi driver. They provide a little map of Beijing with its top ten tourist destination and it sure is a big help.

Excellent Hotel in a fantastic location”

Nice rooms and the staff were great

We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Kapok. The location of this hotel is fantastic, really close to the forbidden city and Wangfujing street. We were upgraded on the first night to a bigger room which was lovely however we wern't willing to pay the extra 300 yuan a night to stay in the bigger room. We then spent the next 4 nights in the courtyard room. A lot smaller but fine for us as we were hardly there. There is a supermarket near the apple store in the mall on Wangfujing street however it's a little expensive. We also found a steakhouse called Williams at the southern end of the mall which was expensive compared to the standard restaurants but it was well worth it as we we're over noodles by that stage. Dinner for 2 cost us about $70

Excellent hotel in the centre of Beijing”

Location, price, service & design

Excellent hotel, nothing to complain about. Hotel Kapok has Chinese management, and I must say, they did a good job! This hotel is very popular in tripadvisor and I can only confirm its merits. When I stayed in the hotel, most guests were foreigners, which is a very good indicator about the quality of the hotel and the services. The hotel has a very original desigh (see picture), and is a boutique hotel. Location is perfect: near forbidden city, restaurants, local food market, Wangfujing shopping street, 24-hours convenient shops, etc. The rooms are modern, clean and attractive. Everything you need is available in the room. Not too spacious, but really comfortable. Nice bathroom. The breakfast buffet is really good: lots of choice (both western & Chinese food), excellent bread, etc. Three minor issues: 1. the breakfast manager is a bit too enthousiastic: a lot of shouting and not very polite to his staff. 2. I asked the hotel reception if it was difficult to find a taxi early in the morning as I had to pick up my wife at the airport. The male receptionist answered me that it was indeed difficult to find a taxi that early, but he kindly offered me a taxi for the price of 200 RMB, which is more that double the price. I politely declined. The next morning, it was no problem at all to find a taxi to the airport for the normal price of around 80 RMB.... 3. The information folder in the room could be more complete. I am still puzzled where the fitness is, and if there is a spa or not. But overall, I had a very nice stay in this hotel! Recoommended!!!

Simply loved it”

- Excellent service - Excellent room - Excellent location - Excellent value
- Couldn't find an iron anywhere in the room!

Stayed one night at Kapok hotel at the beginning of October. Upon arrival, I was immediately impressed with the lobby/reception area. There were 2 small "outdoor" terraces and reading area/booths. The decor throughout the hotel was sleek, modern, funky and creative. Check-in service was neither swift nor slow, but staff were pleasant and informative. Perhaps what I liked most about Kapok hotel was the room. Stayed in the Fashion Suite, which was spacious, immaculate and tastefully and thoughtfully furnished. There was an LCD tv with plenty of English channels and a super modern telephone with more functions than i knew how to handle. The hotel is very generous with toiletries (shaving kit, toothbrush set) and other perks such as slippers, complimentary water and 2 bottles of juice. Bathroom was large with a unique layout. Glass weight scale was a nice addition, if only it worked. The only negative I can think of is that I couldn't find an iron in the room! Location is excellent - 5 min walk to the east gate of Forbidden City, across the street from Donghuamen market (overhyped) and about a block away from Wangfujing. Service was also top notch - staff helped me fetch a bicycle for hire from a nearby vendor and volunteered to call a taxi to the airport. For the amount I paid and the value I received, this is one of the best hotels I've ever stayed in and I've stayed in quite a few all over!

Nice boutique hotel that nails the major details.”

Location (near the Forbidden City), staff, cleanliness, natural light.

My wife and I booked the Hotel Kapok for four nights total, splitting our booking into separate two night chunks. We found our stay to be welcoming and enjoyable, and the Kapok nailed most of the major details while whiffing on a few smaller ones. The first thing that struck us about the Kapok was its location: it is literally two (short) blocks from the Forbidden City. For the purposes of visiting the Forbidden City, Tiananmen or the Wangfujing area, it's hard to beat the Kapok. Unfortunately that location is something of a double-edged sword. The Wangfujing shopping area, with its food courts and high-end stores, has crowded out almost all the local dining options, with the exceptions of a few very small joints (one right across the street from the hotel). Drinking options are even more dear. The metro is reasonably close, although taxis are probably a better option for getting to most places from the hotel. As for the other components of our stay, the hotel gets the major things right. The hotel interior and the rooms are very clean, with housekeeping staff visibly working at almost all hours of the day. A large atrium affords the hotel lots of natural light and the courtyards add a nice touch of greenery. The hotel staff is especially friendly, with varying degrees of English speaking ability (the best can speak English almost fluently).

we stayed there for 3 nights in early may. the room was clean, spacious & comfortable; it's a modern design where the entire bathroom is enclosed in glass with no door, but you can slide curtains around it to provide some privacy. amentities like fridge, safety deposit box, robes, and nice slippers were also provided. the hotel is located only a block away from wangfujing night market, and very close to wangfujing shopping district. tiananmen square and forbidden city is about a 15 min walk. also, internet access was free. there is no metro station close by (closest is tiananmen square east), but thankfully taxi is fairly cheap in beijing. the hotel also charged for inroom coffee packets (it's more economical to buy that stuff from a convenient store a few doors down, but nestle instant coffee sold there has more milk & sugar than coffee). we had access to a "courtyard", but found it a little gimmicky and didn't use it (we didn't feel like being caged in a fishbowl while being viewed by hotel patrons walking down the hallway...) we opted out of breakfast (i speak mandarin so we ate at places nearby), but had lunch there one day and found the food & service to be very good (though a bit pricey for locals). overall, our stay was excellent, and will definitely recommend it to travelers.

Great Location”

Location, Room facilities, Cleanliness, Staff
Internet services, No complimentary tea, coffea

Kapok hotel though being of a four star catagory surpassed our expectations. Though rooms were small they had some facilities which even five star hotels lack. Rooms were clean and room service was excellent. Surprisingly tea and coffea was not complimentary and even if you were happy to pay the rather hidh asking prices there was no milk/creamer available, so better take your own. The staff at the reception were very helpful and had a good knowledge about local attractions and shops. One of the doormen was particularly helpful. Local and IDD calls are reasonable but we were surprized to be faced with a bill for an IDD call of 2 hours durarion which we we never took. It was finally settled but was an unpleasent episode of an otherwise pleasent stay. Beware of their automated phone system, there is obviously some glitch somewhere. Free internet is available if you take your laptop but internet access at the business center can be expensive (2 Yuan per minute) as it take ages to log on. The biggest plus point is the location as it is walking distance to the Forbidden city and the exciting night street market with its exotic food and the exclusive shops of Wangfujing street. Cannot comment on hotel restaurants as we did not have any meals, lots ofplaces to eat nearby.

Cool Luxury and Great Location”

Nice room, great view, good breakfast, great location.
Staff's limited language and service skills, hard bed.

This is a very nice new hotel in a great Beijing location. Very close to the Forbidden City, shopping, China Art Museum, Wangfujing St., neighborhood hutungs, etc. I stayed in a top floor corner suite with a 180 degree view. The large room was well appointed, and the bathroom was outrageous. Walk-in closet. Toiletries and linens are first rate. The buffet breakfast (70 yuan) was delicious, although service was minimal. Downsides were a very hard bed (even for Asia), and a number of staff who understood little or no English. Regardless, the Kapok was well worth the good price that I paid on Agoda.

In the heart of Beijing”

modern rooms, excelent location near tiananmen square, good service, nice staff

Its a good choice for someone who choose to visit the main atractions in Beijing and at the same time do some shopping. The hotel its locatd in the same block as the Forbiden City, and its possible to walk until there, visited the monument, Tiannamen Square, the Tower of the Bell and the Garden near. The hotel as a contemporary dsign, the rooms are big, with all the confort, and if you visit Beijing in hot days, you can enjoy an excusivly small garden for each room. The satff is nice, always making a efford to speak english and giv advise for places to visit. The subway its very near and only cost 3 renminbi each journey and its clean and easy to larn all the stations. There is a nice chinese restaurant in the hotel and at nigth transforns into to a bar. The breafast as agood standard If you want to stay in Beijing, the Kapok Wangfujing its a nice option, since its located near the shopping paradise.

Excellent hotel and excellent location”

Location is superb, people were nice

I had not been to Beijing for ten years and am pleased with the Kapok Hotel as it is right between the Forbidden City and Wangfujing shopping area. Even though I had booked a single room, they upgraded me to a suite. I do speak mandarin so had no problem. Breakfast buffet was not included but no problem. The buffet was certainly satisfactory with both Chinese and Western food. Eggs, ham, bacon, coffee, cereal, some fruit, etc. I definitely recommend the Kapok. I had a computer in my room and could use it free.

Great Hotel with Big rooms”

Convenient, Comfortable

Overall, the hotel was great! we got upgraded to a suite which was just awesome. I suggest to any guest staying at Kapok to try the suite. Its spacious and could probably sleep 4 people comfortably. The hotel is very clean, truly 5 Star quality with very approachable staff . The only problem with the hotel is that the concierge service could be improved. They are familiar with the different and more popular choices for tourists, but maybe because beijing is so big, no one can truly know all parts of it. Although they will help you any way they can. The value for money is there. The place is right behind the forbidden city about a 20 min walk. It is also very close to the shopping district, Wangfujing which makes it ideal for sightseeing and those who love to shop.

Fantastic service and location!”

Walking distance to Forbidden City, Tiananamen Square, Wangfujing District, Night Market, subway, and the list goes on...
Nothing

This is a must stay location! The service by the staff met and exceeded our expectations. English spoken by staff everywhere in the hotel, the room was comfortable and quiet, the hotel itself was beautifully adorned, the location provides many local eateries across the street and the exotic Night Market one block away. The Forbidden City out the the door to the left was a very easy walk, the Wangfujing area out the door to the right another easy walk (except when carrying bags laden with shopping prizes back to the hotel.) T-Square and subway access adjacent to the Forbidden City were added benefits. If you want a temporary fix for Western food, there's Grandma's Kitchen out the door to the left and left again at the traffic light (just before the Forbidden City.) The restaurant will be on the right side of the street and the walk is about five minutes from door-to-door. When we return, we'll definitely return to the hotel!

Nice boutique hotel in central location”

Design, location, facilities

Hotel Kapok Wangfujing is stylish modern boutique hotel in a very central location - right between Forbidden City and Wangfujing pedestrian shopping and easting area. Rooms are all white, with all modern facilities and large bathrooms (you will need to move curtain rather to close the door if you do not want to be watched when brushing your teeth :) but this is essentially not an issue). Reasonable price makes it good choice in Beijing.

Kapok Beijing is awesome”

staff, rooms, service, location
none

Hotel Kapok Wangfujing Beijing was an awesome place to stay. Close to metro, Forbidden City entrance, Tiananmen Square, hutongs, local food and big shopping district. Staff very helpful and friendly. Big, beautiful bright rooms. Best hotel experience we had in mainland China. Breakfast unbeatable in its diversity and quality. Would stay there again without hesitation.

Great hotel in great location”

Lovely bedrooms, stylishly furnished and had everything we needed

We were very happy with our stay in Hotel Kapok. The room - a suite - was very spacious, comfortable and stylish. The bathroom was much bigger than our bathroom at home, so we were very happy! Breakfast was a mixture of Asian and Western food, so all were catered for. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel has a very good location - it's a few minutes walk from the shopping area of Wangfujing, and Forbidden City and Tianamen Square are also just a short walk away. I would be happy to recommend this hotel to travellers to Beijing.

Great Hotel, great people”

very close to forbiden city

when i come for check in, there were problems with the rooms, so the manager take me to novotel in wangfujing area instead. they are very responsible and really friendly, not only they upgade to more expensive hotel, they also pay for breakfast and rooms with view without extra charge. kapok hotel itself very close to forbidden city, it is 200 meters away from the east gate, take shuttle to main gate and only pay 1 yuan, very close to metro subway. hotel looks very modern and clean, i think this is the best hotel near forbidden city, i saw some of other hotel close by is very creepy and rundown.

A very good service, five star hotel granted”

service is number one!!!

I really liked how the staff of the hotel gave us a compensation due to electricity-down situation in Wangfujing, Beijing at that time. They explained about us clearly in English, called a taxi and sent us to a five-star hotel called Prime Hotel nearby. The location is just perfect and the room rate is higher than Kapok Wangfujing, but I know this is because of the government's act regarding the electricity maintenance or repair during our visit to Beijing. We did not pay any other fee and we can stay overnight in a very beautiful room. I really like their service, two thumbs up!
