“Beautiful ryokan in a serene location, scrumptious and beautifully plated food”

I could only post 8 photos, so will focus on the room and the last two photos are the appetizer at 1st night dinner and part of my 1st morning breakfast. I picked this place because it was recently renovated so everything is nice and new, and early booking gave me a substantial discount. It is within walking distance of Horaien Gardens and Chisuji Falls. The interior decoration is so classic Japanese and whatever modern is camouflaged so well to blend in harmoniously, eg in the bedroom the inner sliding door handle, and the towel hanger bars beside the sinks are made to look like bamboo. The staff made so much effort to communicate with us in English, their sincerity shone through. The food was simply amazing, and they made certain that there were no repeats on the 2nd dinner and 2nd breakfast so it was truly a delight. We tried all the baths, and it is not too inconvenient that we had to shower before coming down to the private baths. Take note that the rooms have no moisturiser, this is at hair dryer tables in the public baths, and the amenities like toothbrush sets are at the hotel lobby. The Western beds are the firm kind which suits me, the pillows were a bit too flat but still comfortable, while the coverlet was like a soft cloud. The lobby is truly relaxing, it has a view of pure greenery and has coffee and tea machines. At certain hours there are other drinks, eg vinegar juice, water with different hardness levels, etc. We tried the free late night ramen on our last night, it came with a sizeable piece of pork! Besides the snacks in the room, there are snacks put outside the baths and dining hall at certain hours (the Pino peanut and chocolate bite sized ice-creams are so delicious, and the flavoured popsicles are fun too). The drinks are different by area, eg in the rest area of the private baths they have buckwheat tea, soda and honey lemon, while outside the public baths under the reception lobby, there is chocolate and plain Meiji milk. We did not have time to try the 6 - 7 pm lobby snacks as it clashed with the dinner time we chose, but we certainly enjoyed the lavish dinner and breakfast spread each day. One dinner we picked hotpot and chose wagyu beef (3 big long slices + mince) and pork + duck (3 long slices, 4 short slices + mince) respectively, while for the second dinner we picked the grill and it was a mix of land and sea, including lobster! But even the chicken in the grill set tasted amazing! Each meal came with sashimi which was amazingly fresh. It rained every day we were there but some of the outdoor baths had roofs overhead, so the rain did not deter us from enjoying the outdoor baths! We did not use the free shuttle van to and from Kowakudani station because we preferred to take taxis directly from the previous accommodation and to the Romance Car station, but it is such a good service and the van looked very comfortable. Would recommend this as a worthwhile experience.

      “Immaculate Room with Spectaculars View”

The views are breathtakingly calm and serene. The room appears to be improved version of traditional Japanese room design, surprisingly spacious and well equipped. The natural onsen hot spring settings are as good as they can get, with both indoor and outdoor hot springs artfully designed and comfortable. The breakfast and dinner menus are both excellent traditional Japanese, plentiful and really delicious. The only regret we’ve encountered is some unruly toddlers in the dining room just can’t stop screaming loudly and may have ruined the perfect atmosphere, foods and excellent services they have provided. The restaurant staffs should have done something to stop this continuous high pitch screaming. Instead, nobody did anything about it. The Japanese are really too polite and tolerant to spoil the mood of all fellow diners.

      “Top-notch Service & Amenities ”

This beautiful ryokan does not disappoint when it comes to amenities. The dinner was superb, multi-course meal that will leave you very full. Service from check in was attentive. We did not get to choose the earlier dinner time as it was booked out by the time we checked in, which led to eating very late and finally finishing dinner at 10pm, so be aware that could be a possibility if you do not enjoy eating late. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese breakfast with fish, rice, eggs, and pickled vegetables. There are 3 private onsen that are first-come first-serve; we had no problem staying in 2 of them during our one night there. The public onsen is even more beautiful than the private ones so don't miss out! Staff do speak English but they loved being surprised by my use of Japanese. Lovely folks all around, even had a shuttle that dropped us off after check out at the train station nearby which saved us a long walk. The room itself was meticulously clean and the bedding was lovely. The bed though is FIRM, I am talking a clearly new, expensive mattress that was harder than a brick despite having a "plush topper" built in. I would come back in a heartbeat except my back hates me already for putting it through the one night on that mattress. Make sure you are totally okay with a very, very firm mattress before booking, or plan to use the onsen to soothe the inevitable back pain you'll be in!

      “Exceptional”

We only spent 1 night of our 10 day Japan trip, but really wished we would have done at least two nights. This was a beautiful and relaxing experience, the surrounding area/town has beautiful landscape. Our stay was very peaceful and comfortable, loved the balcony tub, the onsen experience was also really relaxing with the pools. We had both dinner and breakfast included in our stay. The dinner offered left us all very full, the breakfast was less appealing but that’s largely due to our western diet preference for breakfast. We also had udon lunch at a restaurant nearby which was walking distance. I highly recommend booking a stay here.

“Paradise in Hakone worth the cost”

This onsen ryokan in Hakone was honestly one of the highlights of our two week Japan trip. It was the most expensive accommodation we stayed at during out trip but we definitely got what we paid for. Staff are very welcoming and friendly and had no issues checking in as the woman (didn't get her name) who checked us in spoke very good English. They also provide a free shuttle to and from Kowakudani station which we used otherwise it's a 15 minute walk up a rather steep hill. We stayed in the newer building in a fairly large room (biggest room we had our entire trip) with the Open Air bath on our balcony which we definitely took advantage of before bed and just before checking out. They also provide these comfy pajamas that you can wear around the ryokan along with a free amenity bag to carry to the onsen baths. We didn't use the public onsen baths but we did get a chance to soak in a private onsen (be prepared for a wait) but it was worth it and there are 3 of them to choose from. No reservations for these - if the wood plaque is hanging in the hallway then that bath is free to use. There is also free milk, ice pops and some yummy chinese style dumplings at around 6-7pm which were a great snack after a soak. There is also a gift shop and 24 hour free tea, coffee, water and juice. We chose the Kaiseki style Japanese BBQ dinner and man was it ever delicious! There was even Nomihodai (all you can drink) for the first 60 minutes of your meal which you order on a tablet they provide to all the tables. We were completely stuffed after dinner that we didn't have room for the free late night ramen they provided at around 10pm daily. Breakfast is very much traditional Japanese style so to all of my fellow westerners be prepared to step out of your comfort zone (you are in Japan after all). The only downside to this stay was the fact we only stayed for one night. If you can shell out the cash it is easily worth a two night stay. If we ever come back to Hakone we will come here again for sure.
