Jaffna hotels & accommodations

We stayed 2 nights at the Jetwing Jaffna and from the moment we arrived to the moment we left we received only the very best of service from their plentiful and attentive staff. The breakfast was by far the very best we have experienced in our 20+ days in Sri Lanka! The Sri Lankan options were amazingly good and the tea was simply outstanding. We cannot recommend th...

Two night stay was amazing - restaurant evening meal and breakfast very very good - staff very helpful and friendly - pool and hotel very clean - special thanks to Upali and Juckshan on reception both a credit to northgate jetting hotel - we will definitely return on our next visit to Sri Lanka in November this year

Everything about the Thinnai is lovely, especially the staff. They are so welcoming and went above and beyond to cater to our every ask. The rooms are clean, spacious and have everything you need and the food is superb. I would especially like to call out the guest relations team and the front office team who went out of their way to make us feel special. The Thinnai w...

With temperatures up to 40 degrees while we were in Jaffna, the Green Grass Hotel felt like an absolute oasis to come back to after a long day sightseeing. The pool was a welcome feature and well used, as was the air-conditioning! Room service staff were friendly and accommodating. Location was central with easy access to tuk tuks and pushbikes and only a few minutes f...

Good hotel with friendly and helpful staff (can arrange transport and offer advice etc), in its own grounds so it is quiet and feels away from the city but is within walking distance of the fort, library and shops. While the rooms could do with a bit of an update, they were large, clean and with good tv and the best internet I have had in Sri Lanka. The Indian High Com...

Relatively new property so it is in good shape however, there are signs of neglect setting in. Right next to the railway station so you will hear the few trains that pass through. There isn't anything nearby so you either have to venture into town (15-20 min walk) for food or use the restaurant at the hotel but be prepared to get told there are no beers and wait for 45...

We stayed as a group and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff, in particular the owner were incredibly accommodating, going out of their way to help with purchasing train tickets, drivers and even helped us out on the beer run!!! The hotel is simple but was perfect for our needs, the rooms are immaculate with both aircon and a fan, and the beds are comfortable. The h...

situated in best nice Nallur environment with traditional Jaffna homely feeling with quite large room and supportive staff. will consider going back again. closer to kovils and main bus routes and few Kms away from main town. Vegetarian eateries in walking distances

Great place to stay, when you come to visit Jaffna. The team was awesome and always answering questions with a smile. They have 8 rooms, which are clean and big. Breakfast was tasty and changed in the two days we stayed. You can rent bikes and a scooter, but it's limited, so tell them in advance. Good to know: if your train setups in Jaffna Punkankulam train station, g...

We were given 5 star care and service at this simple guest house. We stayed in an air-conditioned room with a shared bathroom. The hosts were extremely attentive to our needs. Staying in Jaffna and staying in PJ Hotel was a perfect choice! After a long bus ride I was looking forward to staying in a nice and clean hotel room in a relaxing surrounding. I stayed in Sri Lanka a month, but this place was the worst. When I arrived they couldn't find my reservation and I had to wait almost an hour before I could check in. Then they offered me a room without a window. The place is dirty and unorganized. It doesn't matter if a place is cheap or not as long as you pay for it there has to be service.

We had an ok stay at Lotus Inn, room was rather basic but had air-con, bathroom just ok. Hotel restaurant is a basic cafe open to the public. Breakfast is Sri Lankan fare. Very cheap meals (Masala dosa was excellent and only cost 100lkr). Limited English spoken in the cafe, not really a problem, just go and point. Certainly not a boutique hotel and rather overpriced ...

There was no cook for most of the time. Food was brought from outside and from far. It was cold by the time it got to us. Didn't feel like eating. Breakfast poor. Second day we ate fruits alone. Communication between the Jaffna branch and the Charty Beach Resort was poor. They didn't know we had booked. We had to go to Jaffna to confirm. They took at least an hour to s...

We loved this place, the staff were very accomidating especially with us wanting to change our room. They were very helpful with tips on where to go and what to see. They also arranged a driver for us to have a look around for the day as well as dropping us off at the station. The building its self is very charming! We loved our stay here.

We were pleasantly surprised while visiting Jaffna and staying in this hotel made it more memorable. Staff were friendly and getting away from the hustle and bustle of Colombo was just what we needed to relax. Would love to stay again if I ever went back to Jaffna.
Cheap places to stay in Jaffna

It's always hard to find a budget accommodation in Sri Lanka for backpackers. This place is pretty nice and not so expensive for a single room. This place has pretty clean room but too small. When I was looking for a room, I tried to find a place which do not ask any extra cost on arrival. They said their price is including Hotel tax 15%, nation building tax(?) 6.4% ...

We had the most amazing time in Allens guesthouse. He was the place - taking care of everything, telling us about the different things to do in Jaffna, making us breakfast, coffee etc. But most important of all we had some very nice talks on the veranda, about life in Sri Lanka and life in general. And we got a hole lot wiser by meeting Allen. While we were there, we g...

Rooms are grim. Stained walls, grubby, hard red floor, bare essentials and absolutely no frills. We saw there was a nice room but I imagine that is a higher price. Real reviews for hotels
Jaffna is a time-warp. Development has been delayed by twenty-five years of civil war. This manifests itself in a city without many private cars but lots of tuk tuks and bicycles, and makes it an interesting and charming place to visit.
There are 2 lovely beaches to visit, KKS and casuarina beach, the islands are beautiful, the people are friendly and it felt safe.
There really isn't much to do in Jaffna. It is pretty new on the tourist circuit, having just opening up to tourism.
Jaffna is still coming to terms with the end of the Civil War in 2009. Most of it's heritage sites were simply destroyed & there is little inclination or support to restore them as potential tourist attractions.
A very exciting city, full of culture. not polluted. Very friendly people. Excellent food. Afforable living standards.

Travel Tips for a Memorable Jaffna Experience
When visiting Jaffna, being aware of local customs and etiquette can enhance your travel experience. The people of Jaffna are known for their warm hospitality, and a simple greeting in Tamil, such as “Vanakkam”, can go a long way in building rapport. It’s also important to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. Women should consider wearing skirts or dresses that cover the knees, while men should opt for long trousers. This not only shows respect for the local culture but also helps you blend in with the community.
Safety is another aspect to keep in mind while exploring Jaffna. The city is generally safe for tourists, but it’s wise to remain vigilant, especially in crowded areas. Keep your belongings secure and be cautious when accepting offers from strangers. Additionally, drinking bottled water is advisable to avoid any stomach issues, as the local tap water may not be safe for consumption. When it comes to currency, the Sri Lankan Rupee is the local currency, and having some cash on hand is beneficial, as not all places accept credit cards.
Lastly, consider learning a few basic Tamil phrases. The locals appreciate the effort, and it can make interactions more enjoyable. Phrases like “Nandri” (thank you) and “Unga peru enna?” (What is your name?) can be useful. Engaging with the community through simple conversations will enhance your experience and provide deeper insights into the culture of Jaffna.

The local artisans take pride in their work, and buying directly from them supports the community. Additionally, spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, and curry powder can be found at the market, allowing you to bring a taste of Jaffna back home.
For a more curated shopping experience, visit the boutiques scattered throughout the city. These shops often feature locally made products and provide a quieter atmosphere for browsing.
