Where to stay in Dunedin
Dunedin hotels & accommodations

Excellent location. Well conserved and maintained building both in and outside. We booked in a superior twin for a family of 4. Spacious room with 2 queen's beds were enough to stay in feeling easy. Bathroom was clean. WiFi was strong. Breakfast was very good. I really love the elevator of Worldwar age that was still in good service. I really much appreciate this hote...

50 points for - large, spacious rooms - excellent shower quality - free laundromat (washer and dryer), with laundry powder provided - friendly service, check in was smooth and we were offered fresh milk - unit and linens were clean - cheap, paid $125 per night per room Minus 5 points for - overall age of unit, furnishings etc are old (but it does remind me of my flat...

One muddle-headed member of our group came to an awkward realisation that we didn't book our accommodation only on the day we arrived in Dunedin. Our worries were quickly laid to rest when the most accommodating host assisted us by placing us in a bigger room for the night and arranged another beautiful accommodation option just down the street. What's more, after pr...

Wish we could have stayed longer. Unfortunately we had limited time with, so much to see and do, in our short holiday around the beautiful South Island of New Zealand. The hotel room was very well equipped. The staff were very friendly and helpful with directions for getting around town. We didn't have time for breakfast but our view of the dining area showed there ...

Great location only walking distance from the centre of Dunedin. Owner was very helpful in pointing out the sights to visit in the city and restaurants for meals. Wifi very strong too. Downside was that the rooms whilst clean were quite dated, with very small shower facility and soft bed. Still recommend for value in Dunedin.

I've wanted to see this place for ages, and was glad to see a decent deal, the night I was visiting Dunedin. Would definitely book again This website won't let me post unless I grade the staff. I met no staff. But I did miss out on the email from the owner, telling me the door code. Luckily, he answered the second time I phoned

We spent one night at Aria on Bank Motel. It was a small but comfortable place with stylish design. The room was well equipped with a kitchen and a bathroom. Everything looked very new and sparkling clean. The only thing I can complaint is that the mattress was too soft and thin, which is not very good for my back. Otherwise it was a perfect experience here. The lady a...

Close to city enabling a short drive to local sights. Adequate 1 bedroom unit with comfortable beds. Good cooking facilities. Hotel had a good amount of literature on things to do and see to the local and regional area. Staff friendly and had helpful advice on sights to see in the area.

This has got to be the Top 2 motels/hotels we stayed at throughout our 14nights in NZ. We paid for the ground floor apartments which were the cheapest. When we checked in, the male host upgraded us for free to the top floor apartment! It was such a nice thing to do. Absolutely stunning views of St Clair Beach. It was wonderful to wake up to the sound of the ocean waves...

We stayed 2 nights in late September. Weather was still cold but the room was a comfortably warm retreat at the end of the day.. And heavenly electric blankets!! Clean compact area with all you need to self cater breakfasts so we didn't use the buffet continental breakfast but it looked adequate and well priced. Room was large with additional lounge seating, bed sup...

Spent two nights at Amross in Dunedin last week on business - first-time stayer. The welcome was warm and friendly, and the unit I had was spacious, clean, modern and very comfortable. The bed was excellent, good selection of pillows (i prefer thinner pillows, but often Motels just have very thick bulky pillows) and the shower had excellent pressure. They also had Ne...

When we arrived the house it was sound 22:30 due to a longtime driving from Christchurch. The host was still waiting us ,so impressive. The house is a Victoria style 2 level B&B, which is fine decorated and very clean. Facilities are old but it doesnt matter. Car park is available at back yard, which can accommodate 5~6. Dining room is a small hall and with shelf of VH...

The Cumberland Street, central city location is handy to the Octagon, Railway Station, supermarkets, cafes and great retail therapy. The staff are some of the friendliest I’ve encountered anywhere, but I’m delighted to say that seems to be the standard for Quest; (I’ve stayed at 2 Quest Hotels in Wellington, 1 in Whangarei, and now 1 in Dunedin, and the staff were fabu...

Nicer place then expected. Easy access to town. Was there to see the lil blue penguins at night and this provided a place to get a great sleep afterwards before heading onto Dunedin. Place looked and felt new, clean, everything where it should be. Only concern if you are a light sleeper try to request a unit that does not back to the main road. There was construct...

The staff in Best Western Dunedin Motel is very very warmly and friendly! The room is clean, the wifi speed is fast, the bed, the heater, the hot water, the kitchen...everything is wonderful, and provides everything you need!! It's the best motel I have ever lived in New Zealand.

Overall it's a good hostel in a nice part of Dunedin. The bathrooms could have been cleaner. Also going downstairs to the reception/bar did get a bit annoying. The common room/kitchen is the best part of the hostel. Very comfortable with plenty of space to cook, relax, and meet other travelers.

We stayed in one of the cabins, which was next to a stream. The site was compact but didn't feel overcrowded. We were surprised there was no shop there (we were given milk on arrival) but were provided with a map showing nearby supermarkets and restaurants. Dunedin was a 5-10 minute drive away. We especially enjoyed Otago Peninsular and the weekly farmers' market (Satu...

Really comfortable apartment with comfortable bed. Wished we stayed more than one night to take better advantage of the facilities... had a great time chilling out on the armchairs, watching TV after a full day of sightseeing in Dunedin (which was a town exceeding expectations)

We had a wonderful stay at St Clair. Only 10 mins drive from a busy Dunedin- market day etc. Had a sea view beautiful room. Sat and watched the surfers while sipping a glass of rose wine. Booked a table for dinner that night. Fabulous meal. If back in that part of New Zealand would stay there again. Next morning went to the Penguin Place on the peninsula. So worth the...

We enjoyed our stay with Trish and her son Simon, they made us feel very welcome into their home. All rooms very well appointed...you had the run of the house with a fully equiped kitchen if you wished to cook your own meals then you could do so, laundry, a lounge room to spread yourself out and a beautiful dining room where breakfast was served, the view of Dunedin f...

The apt is located on the top of the hill and about 10 to 15 minutes walking distance to the city centre and Otago university. In the night you can oversee the city under beautiful lights. It's quiet and very clean. The facility is excellent and the owner is very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the time of the stay totally.

I had a really wonderful time at the Kiwi's Nest! The bed was so comfy, the shared bathroom was so clean, had hot water, the mini-kitchen in the second floor had a fridge, coffee, & tea. And the location was the best! Just 8-15 walk to downtown Dunedin. There was also parking on the sides, but it's limited so first come, first served. Will stay there again!

Thank you for the friendly welcome we received on our recent stay. Unfortunately just minutes after checking in my young niece was feeling unwell (after a bout of car sickness) and vomited on the concrete outside. The lovely lady who checked us in couldn't have been more accommodating and sympathetic. Without hesitation she checked on the welfare of my niece and then p...

Ok it's not the newest place in Dunedin. But you get no complaints from us. If you want some where central, close to restaurants, easy to drive to the peninsular, and a short walk to town this is it. Helpful staff, clean rooms which are a bit dated, we thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay. Would be my first port of call next time in Dunedin. Value for money here.
Cheap places to stay in Dunedin

Great hostel for the money. Large old house with nice views. I also got upgraded from an 8 bed to a 4 bed dorm for free which was nice. There is some wear and tear and things that could use an upgrade/fixing/replacement. The mattress was not the most comfortable and the bunk bed I was in transferred a lot of the movement of the person below me. It is a bit of an uphi...

Great stay in nice warm comfortable bed.Had a good sleep in a quiet charming place.Enjoy the great view at the roof terrace garden. Good value for money as it has all for any traveller. Big nice kitchen and plenty of space for privacy.Good free WIfi network. Place is just minutes to city center and all the great cafes and shops especially to Pak n Sav and take-aways. W...

absolutely loved the stay at Geckos! highly recommend if you are a student looking for a place to stay and don't wanna spend much especially if you are coming in to Dunedin for a concert or any event, absolute value for money! Lovely staff and were really helpful throughout our stay, thank you your hospitality! wish that the kitchen stayed open after 11pm tho, especial...

The hotel (hostel) is a very nice old building walkable distance from the city centre. The rooms are big, bed confortable. The building is still under renovation as it's very old but this is one of the great feeling there. The he Hungarian guy at the reception and everywhere around the hostel is super friendly and helpful (especially with Hungarian travelers). Thank...

Place was great,BUT Agoda listing was very misleading. It told us that this was a self contained unit.and it wasn't .Luckily they were able to upgrade us to another uni which suited our needs..VERY DISSAPPOINTED WITH Agodas listing on this occasion, have used them before and been very happy. DUNEDIN HOLIDAY PARK WAS A GREAT FACILITY.Would definitely go back there to ...

I just stayed one night after a conference at Otago Museum - the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was spacious and spotlessly clean, with lovely thick towels and also herbal teas (a rarity in less modern hotels). The bed was very comfy and they even had up to date magazines in the room, perfect for snatching 30 mins quite relaxation when on a work t...

We booked in on line quite late for one night, and as the owner and her other guests were at the rugby we were given instructions on how to access and help ourselves to a cuppa and TV. The owner made us very welcome, gave us a lovely comfy bed and breakfast to set us on our way. We had lots of chats with her and two younger American guests. Very nice experience.

Although on a third visit to Dunedin, the beaches at St Kilda and St Clair - and this motel - were real revelations !! Lovely older-style unit with separate dining area, shower and toilet give a real sense of space (we have lived in smaller flats !). Beautiful beach walk up to the eateries at St Clair a definite plus.

this small inn in dunedin was convenient to downtown and include breakfast. the owner was very friendly and helpful to me and to all her guests. the room was very nice with a comfortable bed, tv and nice bathroom ensuite. parking can be something of a problem, but i found a place on the street. the owner showed me some of the available spaces; just another sign of her f...

What a gem! The Highland House Boutique Hotel is well-maintained and clean and updated in both the room and the exterior. The bathroom was updated with new fixtures. The staff was very frie...

Me and my husband love to stay in this motel. The host Lynn is a lovely lady who is very friendly and helpful. Her cat Fluffy is a beautiful cat that also greeted us when we arrived! We booked Longbourne Lodge as we needed accomodation to attend a concert at Forsyth Barr Stadium and this was the only accom available in all of Dunedin. Well worth the 15 minute drive. Modern clean facilities, peace and tranquility, awesome rural setting. Rated food facilities as a 1 because we didn't use them and it wouldn't let me skip the question. Found out after ...

The room was very spacious with all you'd expect in a motel. The bathroom was showing it's age and was in need of an upgrade, but we were only there for a night and it did the job. There was two queen size beds in our room, and there was still plenty of space left. The bed was comfy. It is a little way from the CBD so if you don't have a car be prepared for a little w...

The location is great where it is really close to the city centre and it just few minutes walk to the train station, shopping centre and supermarkets. The services and things provided in the apartment is fully equipped. I'll recommend anyone that want to spend a night in Dunedin must stay at this apartment.

The location was wonderful with quite a view. It was out of the hub-bub of Dunedin and near some very private beaches off the beaten path. We were also close to the Albatross Center.. Keith and Sue could not have been more accommodating and personable If we ever return to New Zealand we would be sure to come back. Jim and Barb

The rooms are very spacious and comfortable and the staff are friendly and helpful. The bathroom was large however the shower was a bit strange as you had to step up into a corner (difficult to describe in words), this created an issue that you needed two bath mats for the shower, one for the step and one on the floor other wise you are at risk of slipping over. This w...

There are free car park slots, the room is big, the beds are comfortable but pillows were soft for me. The water pressure was strong and filled up the bathtub without waiting for a long time. Always very friendly people, easy access to events, shopping accommodation within walking distances. It would be great to see the waterfront developed with cafes, small shops similar to St Clair and Wgtn waterfront.
Dunedin is a beautiful city. The city buildings and houses have classic architecture. Our family loved the Cadbury factory tour! The Otago museum was worth a visit.
A nice town, bigger than originally thought and could have stayed an extra night A must see is Natures Wonders on the otago peninsula - great views and get to meet the seals up close and personal
We loved seeing the yellow-eyed penguin and the little blue penguins. I would highly recommend visiting the Albatross center and taking the evening blue penguin watch/tour.
Dunedin, New Zealand's oldest city, a university city of Scottish heritage, possesses a unique combination of cultural riches, fine architecture and world-famous wildlife reserves on the Otago Peninsula.
We toured many cities in New Zealand and Dunedin is a city that cannot be missd. Very pretty and full of various kinds of activities catering to different interests.
City hub with a lot of attraction places to visit. Eg. The Octagon, first church, railway station, museum, penguin & sea lion
A lot of old colonial buildings in the centre of the city. Steam trains leave from the railway. The Otago peninsula is a short drive away with albatross, penguins and seals.
It is a nice city for stop over between ChristChurch and Queenstown. One day stopover i not enough,at least 2 days so you can visit the castle and the pennisula.
Dunedin's wildlife is true great due to the presence of the Royal Albertros. It was great to see such a large bird flying gracefully in the sky.
An interesting, historical city with very beautiful buildings. The castle is fascinating, as is the railway station; and the train trip is a must.
We were just driving through the town, but had some good food while we were there. Definitely a student own which has fostered 'hypster' like cafes serving great food.
Very nice buildings, like Otago University, Olivestone House and Lanarch Castle. People are very friendly.
We have been there 2 times now and have enjoyed each time. Although both times we were only visiting briefly, passing through.
A very clean and orderly city. Easy access to public transport. The restaurants provide variedcuisine
Dunedin is a beautiful place to visit with its historic buildings and scenic views. The coastal road to the Otago Peninsula has picturebook views.
Lots of restaurants to try around the Octagon and George St. Great mix of history, natural features and quaint/quirky NZ phenomena.
It is well located to allow easy access to water activities, eco activities *(kiwis and albatross), beaches, the business hubs, shopping and universities.
